About this Project

Route 66 Rambler began in my mind as early as 1976, but was embarked upon as a serious Project, in 1979.

Why Route 66 Rambler, and what does that mean? There are various meanings associated with each word in this name, and they all apply to the idea, as well as the various possible combinations. It has to do with this idea of a lost underworld, an unseen nation among us. The AMC Nation. The Lost Dealership Project. Secret papers, rumours, investigative societies.

American Motors Corporation was purchased under control from Renault, by Chrysler Corporation, in 1987. At that time, they ceased finally to exist as a separate and independent corporate entity. The Big 3 had finally won, selling America a new, bland, homogenized, similar-shaped and similar-colored smooth boxes with no flavor, and with hardly a trace of engineering innovation. Exactly what the politically correct, bland, A-Tie-is-a-win, everyone’s the same crowd asked them for.

Look at America now. Through different eyes. This project is intended to preserve, through the lens of time, what America once was, for new eyes to see.
