Thomas B. Jeffery not only owned the patent for the modern bicycle tire, he also perfected that patent for use on the automobile and owned that technology for decades, assuring a license fee from every car maker for the tires on their cars. So if his competitors outsold him in car production, he still made money from the tires that were on those cars.
