Later, in 1972, the AMC 304 V8 was offered, and Randall Engineering of Mesa, Arizona began dropping 401 V8s with 4 speed into the little cars, creating instant dragstrip terrors.

All through the '70s, the Gremlin was a terror on the strips and in professional road racing. And on the modified stocker scene, there was never a more dominant car.

The Team Highball Levi's Gremlin of Dennis Shaw was recently inducted into the International Motor Sports Association(IMSA) Hall of Fame at Talladega Speedway in Alabama.

The Gremlin ceased production in the 1978 model year, and AMC gave it a nice send-off with the Gremlin GT option, a very rare model.

With re-styled exterior sheet metal, the design lived on in the new AMC Spirit and AMX. One version of the Spirit and the four wheel drive Eagle was called the "Kammback" and featured the distinctive styling of the Gremlin, with the rear quarter windows opened up to match the rear profile of the car, giving it a "mini-wagon" appearance in those models. Seen below is the 4x4 1981 AMC Eagle Kammback.

1982 was the final year of production for the Eagle version of this body style, and all Gremlins, Spirit Kammbacks and Eagle Kammbacks are highly sought after collectibles today.
